Observation Narrative
The secondary dune system in the central portion of False Cape State Park supports an extensive, open, sparsely vegetated dwarf shrubland similar to the vegetation of Savage Neck and Parramore Island, but for the ubiquity of Quercus virginiana. Pinus taeda and to a lesser extent Q. virginiana are characteristic associates, but trees in the vicinity of plot are uniformly short (generally < 6 m), with broad crowns and low branches and little vegetation underneath. Stand contains a number of clipped-off basal rosettes of what appears to be Panicum amarulum; it is unclear whether deer browse or some other factor is responsible. To my knowledge there are no reports of recent fire on this dune system.
Schizachyrium littorale occurs just outside the plot.
